Aeronautics is a highly strategic technology area for both Brazil and Sweden. Sweden, despite being a small country, is very successful as a manufacturer of defense aircraft and supplier of parts for civil aircraft. Brazil, through Embraer, is one of the four main manufacturers of civil aircraft in the world. The aviation industry, with the use of advanced technologies, also has considerable influence on other sectors, involving the automotive industry, the communication industry, and the development of new composites, among others. This means that the aeronautical industry is a very important player in the national innovation system.
The common denominator between Sweden and Brazil is the signing of the Gripen NG fighter contract. This contract between Brazil and SAAB for the purchase of 36 fighter jets is different in the sense that both will develop the plan together. The first batch of military aircraft will be produced in Sweden, and the second will be produced in Brazil. The Gripen agreement is about co-creation and knowledge sharing around the new Brazilian fighter. The ambition, both in Brazil and Sweden, is to expand and develop competence for the next generation of aircraft. By building this relationship, there is a unique long-term opportunity to develop these capabilities in collaboration.
