Sweden and Brazil also share a strong commitment to health sciences. Universities, such as USP, and research institutes, like Sweden’s Karolinska Institute and Brazil’s Fiocruz, have a long history of cooperation in life sciences research, an area that encompasses scientific disciplines involving the study of living organisms, such as plants, animals, and humans, and related issues, such as bioethics. Although biology is the fundamental topic of life sciences, technological advances in molecular biology and biotechnology, as well as open innovation, have provided a series of specializations and new interdisciplinary fields. In the Swedish-Brazilian case, the focus is on innovation with the participation of industries, research institutes, and universities from both countries in distinct areas such as e-health, telemedicine, artificial intelligence, prevention of pediatric obesity, and tropical diseases.
